AMBOSELI & SERENGETI

PHOTO SAFARI WITH EDWARD SELFE

The safari begins in Nairobi with a meet & greet at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and a transfer to Tamarind Tree Hotel for an overnight stay. The safari concludes at Kilimanjaro International Airport from where guests can arrange their own onward connections.

Amboseli is one of the most famous national parks in Africa, and for good reason. The quantity of game and the special nature of the surroundings make for incredible safaris. But it can be busy at any time of the year. We stay in private conservancies & concessions while in this area — where we will have very exclusive game viewing — but we will encounter other vehicles when we enter the national park.

Ndutu is in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area which is open to several camps. We travel after the main peak of travel surrounding the wildebeest calving so visitor numbers are dropping off, but some sightings may be over subscribed. However there is always something special to see in this area, so we can avoid the busiest locations. Even when sightings are busy, it doesn’t affect the photographic experience.

Namiri Plains is in a vast and geographically distant part of the Serengeti where few camps can access at the best times of day. We will rarely share sightings with other vehicles (except from our camp) in this area.

1 night at Tamarind Tree Hotel in Nairobi at the start of the trip. Thereafter, included are all internal flights and transfers, full board accommodation, standard drinks, all transport in the National Parks and guided game viewing activities, pro-photographer guiding fees and informal photo processing sessions, National Park entrance fees, laundry, all airport transfers.

International flights, premium drinks, visas, travel and medical insurance, (optional) tips, excess baggage charges, personal calls, gratuities, personal purchases, or any activities not specified in the itinerary.

This safari covers a wide range of habitats in some of the best East African wilderness areas, from forests and lakes to large plains and rocky kopjes.

We start with 6 nights split between two camps on the edge of the Amboseli ecosystem. The targets are the big tuskers and the incredible juxtaposition of wildlife and the scenery of Mount Kilimanjaro. If we are truly fortunate, we will be able to combine the two! But the area also offers a variety of other sightings, including cheetah, large herds of zebra, great waterbirds and the chance of caracal and serval (of which a few melanistic individuals have been seen in the past).

Both Tawi and Tortilis camps have private concessions which allow us to enjoy privacy on sightings. There is a reasonable chance that one or more of the big tuskers will be in the Tawi Conservancy when we stay there, giving us freedom to enjoy this special experience in our own safari area.

After a week in Amboseli, we will travel by road to Arusha, stay overnight at River Trees lodge, and catch an onward flight to Ndutu. The massive grasslands, open woodlands and massive herds of the Serengeti need little introduction; worldwide, this area is known for the bountiful wildlife and the way that visitors feel when they explore the plains of the world’s most famous national park. But with the kudos come the crowds, a feature which has plagued the Serengeti’s reputation for many years.

However, choosing the more remote corners of the national park and selecting the quieter months offers visitors — and especially photographers — the chance to see this ecosystem in a private way that allows for creative photography, extended waits for hunting cheetahs and serene encounters with the nature of the area. In short, it’s a spectacular experience.

This 10-day trip spends 3 days in the Ndutu conservation area and then 7 in the Serengeti itself. Ndutu safaris are based along the lakeshore (where lions, flamingos and giraffes are found in good numbers) and inland away from the water on the vast plains where cheetah, Kori bustard and copious gazelles thrive. Ndutu is also a superb location for nesting Fisher’s lovebirds and multitude of other bird specials.

A week at Namiri Plains follows where photographers can expect multiple cheetah, lion and hyaena sightings, many with cubs or at the den. All of these species regularly hunt during the day and, when the lions finally settle, the cheetahs begin their hunting schedule, keeping photographers busy all day long. There are also opportunities to see leopard and the lesser-known aardwolf as well as serval and caracal.

But it is the landscapes of Namiri which make safaris in that area so special. It’s fun to explore the vast rolling grasslands (plenty with short grass which favours hunting cheetah) punctuated by tall, spectacular rocky outcrops. These rocky kopjes are a focal point for predators and it’s common to find lions hiding cubs in the caves and crevasses, or cheetahs using the height of the rocks to scan for prey.

SAFARI

HIGHLIGHTS

Mega Tuskers

We spend 6 days in Amboseli, photographing the herds of elephants against the backdrop of Mt Kilimanjaro. Special attention will be paid to locating Craig, TJ and other mega-tuskers who still roam the landscape in the shadow of Africa’s highest peak.

Dramatic Scenery

All 4 locations offer spectacular scenery, giving us a wonderful canvas against which to photograph wildlife. We choose to travel at the start of the rains, and there is perhaps nothing more impressive than lions on the kopjes of the eastern Serengeti when the storms are rolling in.

The Elusive Species

We have excellent chances to photograph serval, caracal, aardwolf and bat-eared fox, all of which can be very hard to find in many safari areas.

Cheetah Viewing

There is nowhere better to watch and photograph cheetah than the plains of the eastern Serengeti. Male coalitions, females with cubs and sub-adult pairs roam the plains and offer great opportunities throughout the day when the rest of the predator species have dropped their heads to rest.

PREVIOUS TRIP REPORTS

FROM THIS AREA

Bespoke Ndutu & Serengeti | Mar 2024

The Serengeti holds lots of meaning for me; it featured in Willard Price’s books about Hal & Roger Hunt which I read when I was young; it is also famous as one of the world’s great wildlife areas.

Bespoke Kenya & Tanzania | Mar 2025

We spent a total of 24 days together split between Tawi Lodge, Tortilis Camp, The Highlands Camp, Olakira Migration Camp and Namiri Plains. We put in long hours, early starts and experienced dust storms, rain and mud along the way, but the results were well-worth it: great experiences in nature and some of the best photographic opportunities that I have enjoyed anywhere.

ACCOMMODATION

Tawi Lodge

Set in the heart of its own 3,000 acre private conservancy and in one of the richest game areas in Kenya. Tawi Lodge is an eco award winning lodge, combining unpretentious comfort with subtle accents of style coupled with traditional East African hospitality.

Elewana Tortilis

Tortilis Camp has a prime location for witnessing the majesty of Africa’s highest mountain, Kilimanjaro. The camp is named after the flat-topped, umbrella thorn tree, the Acacia Tortilis, and embraces a hill in one of Amboseli’s areas of Acacia Tortilis woodland. Located in a private conservancy bordering the national park, game drives, walks, sundowners and bush meals take place both inside the national park and in the conservancy, where guests enjoy exclusivity.

Olakira Migration

Olakira Migration Camp offers nine tents in the southern region, one of which has two bedrooms for families. When night falls, our unique mesh-covered stargazing tent design, complete with wooden decking, provides the perfect opportunity to sleep under beautiful skies. All tents have en suite bathrooms with solar-heated hot-water showers.

Namiri Plains

Namiri Plains is one of Africa’s best locations for observing big cats. Located in the vast and remote grasslands of the eastern Serengeti, Namiri Plains provides a tranquil and secluded retreat within a wildlife-rich environment. Being distant from any other camps, the safari experience is wild, private and exclusive.
